I’ve had the pleasure to do some non-digital art for a client. This specific client wanted to have artwork done by hand included as part of their book. I am sharing this picture I grabbed of me working on this for them. I’ve given out tips for writers over the years, but not many art advice. So, let me fix that by explaining this picture.
Since the client requested hand crafted work, I need to trace to copy my own art. My problem was the angle I had been trying to do this was hurting my wrists. This isn’t good for an artist nor an author. My hands are my tools, and I have to take care of them. I scanned an image of my artwork. Then I flipped it upside down. I knew my problem was the need to avoid my laptop’s keyboard. I got some blue painter’s tape. I fixed a clean sheet of paper in place. Then I began tracing my work to copy it by hand.
Artists don’t just create beautiful things, sometimes they create interesting ways to get the job done. Inventing our own tools and ways going about the way we carry ourselves during work hours. We must think outside of the box in a pinch. We don’t always have what we need, especially when times get hard. There are devices and products in the markets that could’ve made this easier, yes, true, but there are a few different reasons why I didn’t order one:
- Didn’t have the budget to buy a new device.
- Didn’t have the time, this work is on a deadline that was close. When you’re a working artist, time is money. You want to do the best you can, sometimes in small amounts of time. The pressure can be real, and you must be able to think on your toes quickly.
- I not get anymore projects like this and would’ve wasted money on a device I’d never use again. To stay budget friendly as an artist, I have to be realistic with the things I get. If I cannot avoid a purchase, I will get what I need. Most of the time, I can figure something else out. Even if I have to create something new, I can continue working on what I need to finish.

This image was not the finished product. That will be seen in the book by my client after it releases. I’ll be credited in the front matter in the copyright. Look for me under my name: Lynn Lesher when you get your copy!
