No one hands you a map when you decide to become a writer.
Most of us stumble into it carrying a half-finished manuscript, a thousand questions, and a growing suspicion that everyone else knows something we don’t. We spend years learning the craft, trying to understand publishing, navigating platforms, marketing, rejection, contracts, deadlines, and the endless stream of advice that often contradicts itself.
Dear Indie was created for those moments.
Part advice column, part conversation, Dear Indie explores the realities of writing and publishing from the perspective of someone actively working within the industry. Some questions focus on craft. Others dive into publishing, freelancing, book marketing, author platforms, submissions, creative burnout, or the practical realities of building a writing life alongside everything else life demands.
There are very few universal answers in publishing. What works for one writer may fail for another. Trends change. Platforms change. The industry changes. What remains constant is the value of shared experience, honest discussion, and learning from those who have already walked a particular stretch of road.
Each column begins with a question submitted by a writer, reader, or creative professional. Some questions are practical. Some are philosophical. Some arrive carrying frustration, uncertainty, excitement, or fear. All of them are welcome.
Writing may be solitary work, but that doesn’t mean we have to figure everything out alone.
If you have a question for Dear Indie, I’d love to hear from you.
